Shakira Fights Against Poverty
Shakira is launching a foundation to stop poverty in Latin America.
Singer Shakira is heading a foundation to stop poverty amongst children in Latin America. The 29-year-old Grammy award-winning singer, along with fellow Colombian, Nobel Prize laureate, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, announced the launch of The Latin America in Solidarity Action on Tuesday in Panama. The Spanish abbreviation for the foundation, which is ALAS, translates in English to “wings.” The charity is hoping to strengthen the efforts of other organizations that are also trying to stop poverty as well as provide nutritional aid to expectant and new mothers and put underprivileged children in school. Other famous singers are also involved in the charity including Ricky Martin, Juanes, Ruben Blades, Alejandro Sanz, Mana, Aleks Syntek, and David Bisbal. ALAS’ executive director is Spanish singer Miguel Bose.
At the age of 18, Shakira founded another charity, Pies Descalzos, which helps children who are victims of violence.
